In the oldest archive in Vethari space, Keth'serai — six centuries of depth, forty years of a question she can't answer from inside the tradition — shows him the lineage record, the predecessor's history, the architecture of what the Concordance designation requires. His stat distribution tells a story she has been reading for seven years. His Signal 14 reads spaces for the people who moved through them. It is the reason she chose him. It is also the reason the seat is closed.
He can't be what she built him to become. The tradition has no word for what the system can already see he is.
Chapter 1 - The Question It Always Asks
The outer passage of the Archives had been waiting for two thousand years, and Keth'serai understood its patience better than most things she understood.
Chapter 2 - The Shape of the Cost
The lineage chamber was the oldest room in the Archives that the Archives still considered part of itself. Older chambers existed. Keth'serai had been in some of them, in the years before she understood the distinction the Archives were making. But the older chambers had been left behind by the accretion of two thousand years of use, the way a house's foundations stop being where people live. The lineage chamber was where the Leth had always worked, and so the Archives had continued to consider it the center of the thing, regardless of what had been built around it.

The predecessor's chamber was not where Keth'serai usually brought candidates.
Chapter 4 - The Actual Thing
The fourth chamber was the only one in the Archives that had no record in it. No pre-Integration notation, no system display, no resonance construct from the lineage's rendering tradition. The walls were bare stone.
Chapter 5 - Both Options Have Real Costs
There was no fifth chamber. The Archives did not have one, or if it did, Keth'serai had not found it in four centuries of using the building, and she had stopped believing in things she couldn't locate.
Chapter 6 - What the Situation Requires
The upper threshold opened onto the city. Not the interior of it: the edge, the specific angle of the Archives' positioning that let you see the whole of the oldest district and, beyond it, the scale of what six centuries of Vethari civilization looked like when organized around the system the Integration had formalized rather than created.
