For a full day the door had gone quiet, and I was the only one on site who knew it could go quiet for good. That fear kept me alert during the repeated debriefings on the surface.
"It was all according to plan," I said for the seventh time of the day. Dr. Rao was trying to fill the fourteen seconds in her records. "You instructed me to step closer. I did. No change, so I stepped forward again. Nev stayed close and followed my lead."
Tobias was recording this session. His smug frown told me how much he disapproved. I wasn't certain if it was of me or kids in general.…
